President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Commonwealth to make history by awarding the hosting rights of the 2030 Commonwealth Games to Nigeria, marking the first time the event would be held on African soil in its 100-year history.
In a passionate appeal contained in a letter addressed to “the Commonwealth family,” Tinubu described the upcoming centenary edition as a historic opportunity to demonstrate inclusiveness and unity within the Commonwealth.
“It is time for Africa. After 100 years of the Commonwealth Games, they have never been hosted on African soil. By bringing the Commonwealth Centenary Games to Nigeria in 2030, you will send a powerful message that every region of the Commonwealth matters, and that Africa is not only part of the story, but central to its future”, the President stated. “
Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria’s hosting would not only symbolise Africa’s growing influence but also reaffirm the Commonwealth’s commitment to diversity and equality.
“Nigeria is the gateway. Africa is the stage. The Commonwealth is the family. Let us make history together in 2030. Let us complete the circle of Commonwealth unity,” he said.
The President concluded his message with a rallying call to action: “The dream must be realized. The time is now.”
If successful, Nigeria would become the first African nation to host the prestigious multi-sport event, a milestone that observers say could strengthen Africa’s role in global sports and deepen ties within the Commonwealth community.
