President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Chief (Mrs.) Hannah Idowu Dideolu (HID) Awolowo, describing her as a pillar of courage, dignity, and national inspiration whose legacy remains evergreen a decade after her passing.
In a statement issued on Friday, September 19, 2025, the President said though ten years had passed since the matriarch of the Awolowo dynasty departed, her memory continues to resonate deeply in the hearts of Nigerians.
“Mama Awolowo was more than a wife and mother. She stood firmly beside Chief Obafemi Awolowo through trials and triumphs, carrying his legacy forward with grace and courage. In doing so, she became a mother not only to her family but also a guiding light for generations of Nigerians,” the President said.
Tinubu described the late HID Awolowo as a symbol of faith, discipline, and patriotism whose life of service and sacrifice provides enduring lessons for nation-building.
“As we remember her today, we celebrate a life of service and sacrifice that continues to inspire us as we work together to build a just, united, and prosperous Nigeria. May your legacy continue to live on, Mama Awolowo,” he added.
Mama HID Awolowo, widow of the late sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo, passed away on September 19, 2015, at the age of 99.
