President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a fresh list of non-career ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, expanding his ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation abroad.
The nominees include several high-profile former government officials: the immediate past Sole Administrator of Rivers State and former Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas; former presidential aide, Ita Enang; former Imo State First Lady, Chioma Ohakim; and former Minister of Interior and ex-Chief of Army Staff, Abdulrahman Dambazau.
Their nominations were formally announced on Thursday during Senate plenary after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read President Tinubu’s letter to lawmakers.
In the correspondence, Tinubu urged the Senate to give swift consideration to the nominees, emphasising the need to fill key diplomatic roles critical to Nigeria’s foreign policy engagements.
Akpabio subsequently referred the list to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, directing the committee to screen the nominees and submit its report within one week.
The new nominations form part of an ongoing overhaul of Nigeria’s diplomatic corps as the Tinubu administration moves to reposition the country’s international relations and strengthen its global presence.
