The recently released THE World University Ranking revealed that the first 10 best universities in the world are in the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA).
At the top of the ranking is the University of Oxford, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, University of Cambridge, Harvard University, Stanford University, California Institute of Technology, Imperial College, London, University of California, Berkeley, and Yale University.
While the University of Cape Town in South Africa is ranked 164th in the world, it is ranked the best in Africa.
The other nine best-ranking universities in Africa are Stellenbosch University (301-350), University of Witwatersrand, South Africa (310-350), University of Johannesburg, South Africa (351-400), University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (501-600), University of Pretoria, South Africa (501-600), America University of Cairo, Egypt (601-800), Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology, Egypt (601-800), and Kafrelsheikh University, Egypt (601-800), and University of Western Cape, South Africa (601-800), Ain Shams University, Egypt (801-1000), Al-Azhar University, Egypt (801-1000), Alexandra University, Egypt (801-1000), Cairo University, Egypt (801-1000).
Though none of the Nigerian universities made the top 10 list in Africa, the University of Ibadan (UI) (801-1000) came 12th and the First best in Africa and Nigeria, respectively. Also ahead of UI in Africa are Future University in Egypt (801-1000), and Mansoura University (801-1000).
Other Universities following UI are: University of Lagos (801-1000), Bayero University, Nigeria (1001-1200), Covenant University, Nigeria (1001-1200), Landmark University, Nigeria (1001-1200), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria (1201-1500), Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria (1201-1500), University of Ilorin, Nigeria (1201-1500), University of Jos, Nigeria (1201-1500), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1201-1500), and Babcock University, Nigeria (1501+).
Interestingly, Babcock University, which has always submitted data for the ranking but never met the full eligibility criteria to receive a numerical rank, moved up this year and was ranked as the third best private university in Nigeria, with Covenant and Landmark universities maintaining the first and second best private universities in Nigeria.
