The 586th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ibadan (UI), came to an abrupt end on Thursday, July 10, 2025, when the lecturer, Professor Amos Olufemi Adeleye of the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, collapsed shortly after beginning his presentation at the historic Trenchard Hall.
Professor Adeleye, a renowned scholar in Surgical Neurology, had just begun delivering his paper titled “Adversity. Neurosurgery. Innovations. Ibadan”, when he slumped on the podium, prompting immediate rescue efforts by medical personnel and attendees.
The lecture marked the ninth in the university’s 2024/2025 academic session inaugural lecture series.
As medics and para-medical staff rushed to stabilise him, many in the audience turned to prayer, with both Christian and Muslim faithful calling on God for divine intervention.
Following emergency intervention, including administering a soft drink believed to raise his blood sugar level, Professor Adeleye regained stability. However, he was unable to continue the lecture and was taken for further medical attention.
