Police operatives in South Africa have re-arrested Nigerian televangelist, Timothy Omotoso, on allegations of immigration offences.
The controversial pastor, who leads the Jesus Dominion International (JDI) church, was taken into custody on Saturday morning by immigration officials and police shortly after concluding a church service in East London.
Speaking to journalists in Johannesburg, South Africa’s Police Commissioner General, Fannie Masemola, confirmed the arrest, stating, “He will be facing charges related to violations of the Immigration Act, and he will appear in court on Monday.”
Omotoso, 66, was previously arrested in 2017 and charged with 32 counts including rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking involving several young women linked to his ministry. He spent nine years in prison before being released in April.
The circumstances surrounding his latest arrest have reignited public outrage and renewed scrutiny of religious institutions operating in the country.
