Barely two weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended its 9-month old strike, two non-teaching staff unions of Nigerian universities have asked their members to begin a 3-day nationwide protests and strike from Tuesday, January 12, 2021.
This is contained in a release at the end of a Joint Action Committee meeting of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), to review the Memorandum of Understanding reached and signed with the Federal Government on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.
According to the document signed by NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU President Muhammad Ibrahim, the MOU addressed inconsistencies in the IPPIS payment, the non-payment of Earned Allowances, the non-payment of arrears of minimum wage, and the delay in the renegotiation of FGN-NASU and SSANU 2009 Agreements.
Others include non-payment of retirement benefits of outgone staff members, teaching staff usurping headships of non-teaching units in clear violation of conditions of service and establishment procedures, neglect and poor funding of state universities, and non-constitution of visitation panels for universities.
The unions say they observed with disappointment that the Federal Government has completely failed to address any of the issues contained in the MoU and to drive home their demands, they have resolved to embark on nationwide protest and strike from 8 am to 4 pm for three days beginning on Tuesday.
