The Rivers State House of Assembly commenced the process of impeaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Nma Odu, on Thursday, January 8, 2026, based on what they termed “gross misconduct” by the duo.
This is the second time the state legislative arm had attempted to impeach the governor and his deputy. The first attempt was in March 2025; the situation was terminated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who suspended the governor and his deputy, as well as the warring legislators, for six months.
During the plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, who, after updating the House about the impeachment, allowed the Majority Leader, Major Jack and the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, to read out the notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Governor Fubara and his deputy.
The notice of allegation, argued to have breached the nation’s constitution, was signed by 26 members of the House.
Relying on Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, Jack reeled out seven points of alleged gross misconduct against Fubara.
Among the allegations levied against Fubara are demolition of the Assembly Complex, extra budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and refusal to obey the Supreme Court on the financial autonomy of the house.
The allegations levied against Odu are reckless and unconstitutional spending of public funds, obstruction of the House of Assembly from performing its constitutional responsibilities outlined in the 1999 constitution, conniving to allow unathorised person to occupy offices without proper screening by the legitimate House of Assembly.
She was also alleged to have approached another group of people for budgetary approval instead of the legitimate Rivers State House of Assembly, seizure of salaries and allowances accruing to the RSHA and the Rivers State Assembly Service Commission.
