The Christian community in Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the tragic passing of Reverend David Ayuba Azzaman, a widely respected cleric, Christian faith advocate, and vibrant online debater. He was confirmed dead on Saturday after a tragic auto crash on his return journey from Makurdi, Benue State, to Kaduna.
Rev. Azzaman, who served as the lead pastor of The King Worship Chapel and Ministry, Inc., was known for his fearless defence of the Christian faith, particularly through spirited interfaith debates and teachings on Facebook. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves across religious circles and social media communities nationwide.
While full details of the accident remain unclear, a close family friend, Rev. Mohammed Mohammed, confirmed in a Facebook post that Rev. Azzaman died alone in the vehicle at the scene of the accident.
“Rev Azzaman had an accident on his way back from Makurdi. He died alone in the car. May he rest in peace. May the Lord comfort us in the name of Jesus,” Rev. Mohammed wrote.
Rev. Azzaman was celebrated for his deep theological insight and unflinching commitment to the Christian cause, particularly in engaging critics of the faith. His bold forays into interreligious dialogue and online apologetics made him a formidable presence, especially among youth and religious scholars.
Through live broadcasts and thought-provoking posts, his Facebook platform became a space for rigorous religious discussion, where he often engaged Muslim scholars and atheist thinkers on matters of doctrine, scripture, and philosophy. Despite occasional controversy, he was admired for his intellectual depth and spiritual conviction.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond.
“His last crusade in Benue State marked the end of a life poured out in service to God. On his way back to Kaduna he departed this world. Pastor Azzaman Azzaman your death is a big blow to the Christian body especially the Northern Christians. You have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you stood boldly against Christian persecution and you kept the faith. Now it is time to receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Your legacy lives on in the lives you touched, the gospel you preached and the courage you displayed. Rest in peace, faithful servant. A true soldier of Christ”, Emeka Ogah wrote on Facebook.
“A great soldier of the Lord takes a bow and goes home to wear his crown of glory after having fought a good fight of faith!” wrote Mustapha Mushas.
“This is a huge loss to the body of Christ. Rev. Azzaman stood firm in the face of opposition and taught us how to engage with truth and grace,” another user posted.
“He wasn’t just a debater. He was a teacher and a man of deep conviction,” one mourner added.
Born and raised in northern Nigeria, Rev. Azzaman’s influence extended far beyond his local congregation. His passion for theology, combined with a fearless approach to controversial issues, made him a unique and revered voice in Nigeria’s religious landscape.
He is survived by his wife and children. Funeral arrangements are yet to be officially announced.
