The Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, came alive again on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, as it received its first aircraft since being shut down in March 2025 for a major upgrade to international standards.
The aircraft, an advance member of the presidential fleet, touched down at exactly 9:14 a.m., drawing cheers from onlookers and airport personnel who witnessed the landmark moment.
The development comes ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Ibadan on Friday, September 26, for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.
Authorities say the successful landing is a strong indication that the upgraded airport is now fully equipped to handle high-profile flights safely and efficiently.
It also sets a positive precedent for future arrivals and departures.
Governor ‘Seyi Makinde had flagged off the airport’s upgrade project in September 2024, promising that the facility, once completed, would “connect Oyo State to the global market.”
“The upgrade of the airport is expected to enhance air travel operations and provide a reliable transportation network for both business and leisure travellers, positioning the state for economic growth and development,” Makinde had said at the ground-breaking ceremony.
The Makinde administration had earlier renovated the airport’s VIP lounge, procured a modern fire truck, and installed a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing system, all aimed at transforming the facility into a modern gateway for the state.
The airport’s reopening marks a significant milestone in Oyo State’s drive to boost its infrastructure and expand economic opportunities through improved air connectivity.
