A popular TikTok influencer Esmeralda Ferrer Garibay and her family were brutally killed in what authorities believe was a cartel-related attack in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The bodies of Garibay, 32, her husband Roberto Carlos Gil Licea, 36, their 13-year-old son Gael Santiago, and their 7-year-old daughter Regina were discovered on August 22 inside a pickup truck in the San Andres neighbourhood. Officials said the victims were wrapped in plastic.
According to Prosecutor Alfonso Gutierrez Santillan, investigators traced the truck’s route through a nearby auto repair shop where bloodstains, spent bullet casings and other ballistic evidence were found. Authorities concluded the family was executed at the shop before their bodies were moved to the vehicle.
“While the forensic results are not yet in, ballistic and blood evidence almost certainly confirm they were murdered at that location,” Santillan said.
Police detained two workers from the repair shop, identified as Hector Manuel Valdivia Martinez and another man known as El Chino, but released them due to insufficient evidence. Shortly after their release, the two men and two relatives were ambushed by an armed group outside the prosecutor’s office. While El Chino managed to escape, the other three remain missing.
Prosecutor Blanca Trujillo confirmed that the ambush was carefully planned, with attackers monitoring the building’s exit for hours.
Garibay had more than 44,000 TikTok followers and was known for showcasing a luxurious lifestyle with videos featuring designer brands such as Dior, Gucci and Louis Vuitton, as well as luxury cars, cosmetic surgeries and vacations. She also shared lip-sync videos to narco-corridos—Mexican ballads that often glorify drug cartels.
Authorities suspect some of her posts, which hinted at her husband’s possible cartel ties, may have drawn the attention of criminal groups.
