The Lagos State Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across Lagos State from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, in view of the forthcoming Local Government Elections.
According to an official statement, the restriction applies to all roads and waterways within the jurisdiction of the state. The police explained that this measure is essential to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections and to prevent any potential disruption by unauthorised individuals or groups.
Key Restrictions
The police command further outlined additional restrictions as follows:
- No Armed Escorts or Security Details: All security escorts attached to VIPs or political figures are banned from accompanying them during the election period.
- Ban on Sirens and Covered Number Plates: The indiscriminate use of sirens and covered vehicle registration plates is strictly prohibited throughout the restriction period.
- Movement Ban on Security Vehicles: All vehicles belonging to quasi-security outfits and even state-owned security agencies are barred from movement. The command reiterated that no state security body is authorised to participate in election security operations in line with the Electoral Act.
Exemptions
Only personnel and vehicles involved in essential services will be permitted to move during the restriction period. These include:
- Emergency medical responders and health workers
- Duly accredited officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC)
- Accredited election observers
- Media practitioners assigned to election coverage and accredited by LASIEC
Identification Required
All accredited stakeholders, including security agencies, media personnel, and observers, must wear official LASIEC identification tags visibly throughout the election period.
Security Warning
In a strong warning to potential troublemakers, the Police Command cautioned all miscreants, hoodlums, and political thugs to stay clear of polling units, collation centres, and all designated electoral locations. The command emphasized that it would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt the electoral process.
The Lagos State Police assured residents of its readiness to ensure a secure and peaceful election, while urging citizens to cooperate fully with law enforcement during the restriction window.
