The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has congratulated retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Cecilia Adebisi Ugowe, on the occasion of her 90th birthday, describing her as a trailblazer whose career was defined by courage, dedication, and landmark contributions to policing in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Babatunde Hundeyin, the Police authorities said Ugowe occupies a distinguished place in the history of the Force, having risen through the ranks at a time when leadership opportunities for women in policing were limited.
Through discipline, merit, and commitment to duty, Ugowe broke multiple barriers to become the first woman to attain several top positions in the Force.
She was the first female Commissioner of Police, first female Assistant Inspector-General of Police, first female Force Secretary, and ultimately the first female officer to rise to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police.
According to the statement, her legacy goes beyond the offices she held, as her career helped open doors for future generations of female officers, broadened participation in policing, and strengthened professionalism within the institution.
Her life and service, the Force noted, demonstrated that leadership in policing is anchored on competence, integrity, and dedication.
As she marks her 90th birthday, the Force said it reflects with pride on her achievements and the inspiration she continues to provide to serving officers, particularly women aspiring to leadership roles.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on behalf of the entire Nigeria Police Force, wished the retired DIG continued good health, peace, and love as she celebrates the milestone age, noting that her contributions have left an indelible mark on the institution and the nation at large.
