Veteran Nollywood actor Ayo Ogunsina, popularly known as Papalolo, has criticised younger actors and actresses in the industry for prioritising financial gains over proper training and professional development.
Speaking during a YouTube dialogue, Papalolo lamented what he described as a decline in professionalism among the new generation of performers, stressing that adequate training and adherence to ethics are essential to sustaining the image of Nollywood.
“I am not happy that the current generation of Nollywood actors and actresses are more preoccupied with money and financial gains. Many of them are not well trained or skilled in the profession,” he said.
“In our time, we first learned the job and made sacrifices before success came. Training also teaches ethics, which must be respected. The younger generation is denting the image of the profession. Training and retraining are very important”, Papilolo added.
The actor also offered advice on marriage, urging younger people to choose partners who truly understand them if they desire a successful and fulfilling union.
He said, “If a man marries right, he will be fulfilled and live an enjoyable life. The first woman I had an encounter with almost snuffed life out of me because she was not my bone of my bone. The woman I eventually married is my bone of my bone; she understands me and makes life pleasant.”
Reflecting on his past lifestyle, Papalolo disclosed that he was once a heavy drinker and smoker during his younger years.
“I was a chain drinker and smoker when I was younger. I could take up to 15 bottles of beer and still perform on stage,” he said, adding that he often smoked while acting at the time.
He, however, spoke reflectively about those years, using his experience to underline the importance of discipline, personal growth, and responsible living.
