The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has announced that local government council elections across the state will now hold on Tuesday, December 29, 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the OYSIEC Chairman, Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, and released to journalists in Ibadan.
According to the statement, the rescheduling follows the INEC’s recent revision of the presidential and national assembly elections, which have been moved from February 20, 2027, to January 16, 2027, the date previously earmarked by OYSIEC for the local government elections.
“After thorough consultations, the Commission resolved to shift the elections to 29 December 2026 to prevent operational congestion, ensure optimal security deployment, protect voter participation, maintain administrative clarity, and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process,” the statement read.
Dr. Adeniyi further clarified that political parties’ campaigns will conclude at midnight on Monday, 28 December 2026, while any necessary re-run elections will take place on Tuesday, January 5, 2027.
He urged political parties and other stakeholders to align their preparations with the revised timetable, reiterating OYSIEC’s commitment to conducting a peaceful, transparent, credible, and inclusive local government election.
