A wave of goodwill messages has continued to trail the emergence of Comrade Akeem Abas as the newly elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, with key government officials and media organisations praising the process and expressing optimism about the future of the union under his leadership.
The Oyo State House of Assembly, through the Chairman of its Committee on Information, Media, ICT and Public Affairs, Hon. Waheed Akintayo (Ilumoka Presenter), described Abas’ victory as “well-deserved” and reflective of his professionalism, integrity, and long-standing devotion to ethical journalism.
In a personally signed statement, Akintayo said the election ushered in “a promising new chapter” for the Oyo NUJ, noting that the Assembly looks forward to a strengthened working relationship with journalists in areas of communication, media development, and public engagement. He urged the new chairman to prioritise unity, uphold high standards, and pursue the welfare and capacity building of members.
Similarly, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, congratulated Abas and the newly elected officers, describing the poll as “a proud moment” for the union and a benchmark for transparent electoral conduct nationwide. Oyelade, a former Oyo NUJ vice chairman, praised the Electoral Committee for its professionalism and commended the outgoing leadership for what he termed “outstanding performance” and a seamless transition.
He remarked, “You have made history today. By conducting a transparent election, you have set an example worthy of emulation.”
He also lauded the candidates who accepted the results peacefully, calling them true democrats.
Media organisations across the state also joined in celebrating the new leadership.
Fresh FM Nigeria, in a message signed by its Group Head of Corporate Affairs, Samson Akindele, described Abas’ victory as “a fitting crowning” of a career defined by vision, diligence, creativity, and courage both in journalism and union service.
The station expressed confidence that the new executives would run an inclusive administration and urged them to uphold their campaign promises.
Fresh FM also congratulated all other elected officers and wished them a fruitful tenure.
Dominion FM Ibadan, in a statement by its General Manager, Olusegun “Flood” Fawole, applauded the outcome of the election, describing Abas as a seasoned and progressive professional whose emergence comes at a critical time for the media industry.
The station noted that journalists in Oyo State had demonstrated trust in his leadership abilities, while urging the new executive council to “hit the ground running” in confronting challenges such as poor welfare, insecurity, unethical practices, the proliferation of quacks, and the disruptive influence of new media.
Dominion FM further emphasised the need for transparency, inclusiveness, and impactful service throughout the new tenure, expressing readiness for a stronger partnership with the union.
As congratulatory messages continue to pour in, stakeholders across government and the media sector have expressed strong confidence that Comrade Akeem Abass’ leadership will elevate professionalism, promote unity, and reposition the Oyo State NUJ for greater relevance in the evolving media landscape.
