The Oyo State Government has issued a stern directive ordering traders, artisans, motor dealers, and roadside vendors occupying pedestrian walkways to immediately vacate the spaces or face sanctions.
Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Major Adesagba Adekoya (Rtd), issued the warning at the agency’s headquarters in Ibadan.
Adekoya noted that the growing conversion of walkways into trading points is illegal and poses serious risks to public safety.
According to him, the obstruction caused by traders contributes to traffic congestion, accidents, and general inconvenience for pedestrians and shoppers.
He listed areas with high levels of illegal trading, including the University of Ibadan (U.I.) axis, Samonda, Mokola, and other busy corridors, stressing that the situation worsens during the festive season.
The OYRTMA boss directed affected traders to move to government-approved markets without delay, warning that failure to comply would attract fines and possible court action.
The state government commended OYRTMA for its consistent efforts to maintain order on major roads and reaffirmed its commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring safe, free movement across Oyo State.
