Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep anguish and shock over the latest wave of violence in Benue State, where over 100 people are feared killed in renewed attacks on rural communities.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, Atiku described the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, lamenting the loss of innocent lives and the trauma inflicted on defenceless communities.
“These killings, once again targeting defenceless communities, underscore the escalating insecurity crisis facing our nation. Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt by those left widowed, orphaned, or displaced,” Atiku said.
While offering his condolences to the victims’ families, the former Vice President called for a moment of national reflection on the growing human toll of violent attacks across the country.
He urged the Federal Government and the Benue State authorities to take swift and concrete steps to address the tragedy, beginning with a transparent investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.
He said, “The identities of the perpetrators must be swiftly uncovered and justice served,” calling also for increased security deployments, better intelligence, and stronger protection for vulnerable rural areas.
Atiku also emphasised the need for inclusive engagement with affected communities through dialogue, traditional leaders, and civil society, as well as immediate support for survivors.
“There must be accelerated efforts to provide compensation, medical aid, trauma counselling, and livelihood restoration to the bereaved and displaced”, he noted.
Calling the massacre a national emergency, Atiku implored Nigerians of all backgrounds to unite in condemning the atrocity and to demand lasting solutions to the wave of violence plaguing the country.
“We must hold our leaders accountable and insist on sustainable solutions to the violent tragedies claiming lives across the country,” he stated.
The statement concludes with a prayer for peace and comfort for grieving families and a renewed call to reclaim security for all Nigerians.
