The Olubadan of Ibadanland designate, Senator Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, has commended the University of Ibadan (UI) for sustaining its premier status in Nigeria and beyond through the exploits of its alumni who have distinguished themselves across various fields.
Oba Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, gave the commendation while receiving Principal Officers of the institution, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, during a courtesy visit to congratulate him on his designation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He noted that despite the proliferation of universities in Nigeria since the era of the first-generation federal institutions, UI has continued to record remarkable achievements, thereby consolidating its legacy as the nation’s first and best.
Although he revealed that he could not attend UI because the Faculty of Technology had not been established when he sought admission in 1966, the Olubadan-designate described the institution as the pride of academia in Nigeria and particularly to the people of Ibadan.
Oba Ladoja pledged his support for the university, assuring that the throne of Olubadan would continue to promote and identify with UI as a shared heritage.
He highlighted Ibadan’s generosity in donating land for the establishment of several higher institutions and research institutes, which has made the city an intellectual hub in the country.
He urged UI management to strengthen collaborations with other research institutes in Ibadan to further advance its mandate and foster development for the people.
In his remarks, Professor Adebowale extolled Oba Ladoja as a distinguished professional whose recognition as a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers underscores his intellectual capacity and technical acumen.
He noted that the monarch’s foray into industry, politics, and governance reflected his deep understanding of public service, positioning him to lead Ibadanland into greater unity, development, and progress.
The Vice-Chancellor reiterated that the university owes its existence to the generosity of Ibadan people and assured that UI remains a committed partner in the city’s development.
He pledged that the university would continue to deploy its vast intellectual resources in support of the Olubadan’s palace through policy advisory, planning, and cultural preservation initiatives.
The courtesy visit featured other Principal Officers of the university, former Registrar of UI and Ekefa Iyalode of Ibadanland, Chief Moji Ladipo, and a former Governing Council member, Dr. Gani Adeniran, among others.
