An Assistant Superintendent of Police, Aondoaver Asom, has been killed during an armed robbery attack in Benue State after confronting suspected robbers and fatally shooting three of them.
The officer, who was attached to the Ops Zenda Joint Task Force, was reportedly travelling in a commercial vehicle to his new place of assignment on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, when the vehicle was ambushed at Amile along the Ugbema–Jato-Aka road in Ushongo Local Government Area.
Sources said the officer engaged the attackers in an exchange of gunfire while attempting to protect other passengers. Three of the suspects were neutralised during the confrontation, but the officer sustained fatal injuries.
He and another injured passenger were taken to General Hospital, Gboko, where he was confirmed dead while receiving treatment. The other victim is said to be responding to treatment.
Police authorities recovered the officer’s service rifle, while his remains have been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The police command commended the officer’s bravery, describing his actions as a courageous effort to protect lives.
