The Obafemi Awolowo University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA) has announced the death of one of its members in the Faculty of Dentistry, describing it as a painful loss and a stark reminder of the mental health challenges facing students.
In a statement signed by the association’s president, Adebayo Idris, and dated August 13, 2025, IFUDSA said the deceased took his own life shortly after the release of examination results.
“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face,” the statement read. The association extended condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.
Acknowledging the emotional toll of the tragedy, the association urged members of the faculty to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles,” Idris said, reaffirming IFUDSA’s commitment to advocating for improved student welfare and mental health support to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
It was gathered that the deceased, whose father is a medical doctor, failed as shown by the released results, and would have to repeat the class for the second consecutive year. He reportedly injected himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State.
