In a major international law enforcement breakthrough, the Nigeria Police Force National Central Bureau (NCB) of INTERPOL has arrested and handed over a notorious fugitive from the Benin Republic, Sunday Kotin, to authorities in Cotonou.
Kotin, who was wanted for a series of violent transnational crimes including inter-border armed banditry, firearms smuggling, cattle rustling, and drug trafficking, was captured following a discreet intelligence-led operation by NCB operatives in Idi Iroko town, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to police sources, the arrest followed a formal request from INTERPOL Benin Republic after investigations revealed that seven members of Kotin’s criminal syndicate are already facing trial in Benin. The fugitive had fled into Nigeria in a bid to evade justice.
After his arrest, Kotin was interrogated by Nigerian authorities over his criminal activities before being handed over to officials of NCB Cotonou for prosecution.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the professionalism and dedication of the officers who carried out the successful operation.
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty, upholding the rule of law, and deepening collaboration with international law enforcement partners.
“Nigeria will never serve as a safe haven for fugitives or purveyors of crime, no matter how highly placed or deeply networked,” the IGP declared.
Egbetokun further assured both Nigerians and the international community of the Force’s unwavering resolve to pursue criminals, strengthen partnerships with global policing agencies, and maintain peace, security, and justice.
The successful arrest and extradition of Kotin, authorities say, underscore Nigeria’s firm stance against cross-border crime and its readiness to cooperate with neighbouring countries in combating transnational criminal networks.
