Nigeria, on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, joined the global community to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, with this year’s theme focusing on a fast-growing concern: “UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls.”
In a statement, Senator Oluremi Tinubu stressed the urgent need to confront the rising wave of online abuse, harassment, extortion, and exploitation targeted at women and girls.
She noted that while digital platforms are designed to enhance human interaction, learning, and productivity, they have increasingly become spaces where many women experience cyberbullying, blackmail, stalking, and gender-based hate.
“Digital spaces should foster genuine human connection, facilitate learning, and promote productivity, not fear. Yet, too many women and girls face bullying, blackmail, stalking, and gender-based hate online. This is unacceptable. Violence in any form, offline or online, undermines the dignity, safety, and potential of women and girls”, she said.
Senator Tinubu expressed solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence and commended individuals and organisations working to combat the menace.
She urged government institutions, particularly the legislature and judiciary, technology companies, civil society, and all Nigerians to take decisive steps to ensure digital spaces are safe, inclusive, and respectful for all users.
“Happy International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2025,” she added.
