The Federal Government of Nigeria has condemned the escalation of hostilities involving the United States and Israel against Iran, calling for restraint and diplomatic engagement.
The government made its position known in a statement signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, titled “Nigeria Calls for De-escalation and Restraint in the Gulf Region.”
According to the statement, Nigeria expressed deep concern over rising tensions in the Gulf region and warned of potentially grave consequences for regional and global stability.
It urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from actions capable of intensifying hostilities, and prioritise dialogue over confrontation.
The government also called for strict adherence to the provisions of the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Conventions, emphasising respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
Nigeria stressed the imperative of restraint in the use of force to prevent civilian casualties and avoid actions that could undermine established norms of international law.
The statement added that preserving the legal framework regulating the use of force remains essential to protecting civilians and maintaining international order.
It further noted Nigeria’s support for renewed diplomatic efforts within established international and regional frameworks, encouraging all parties to pursue peaceful resolution in the interest of collective security and shared prosperity.
The statement concluded that Nigeria stands in solidarity with the international community in its call for calm and maintains that sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law.
