The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has congratulated Captain Kelechi Ndukwe, a distinguished Nigerian-American officer, on his elevation to the rank of Commodore in the United States Navy.
In his new role, Commodore Ndukwe will command Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 60 and Task Force (CTF) 65, headquartered in Rota, Spain.
He is expected to oversee U.S. Navy destroyer operations across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean, a responsibility that highlights his record of excellence, professionalism, and leadership in advancing maritime security and global collaboration.
NIDCOM, under the leadership of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the promotion as not only a remarkable personal achievement but also a source of pride for Nigeria, the international naval community, and Nigerians in the diaspora.
Commodore Ndukwe has built an outstanding career in the U.S. Navy. In April 2021, he made history as the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97).
His journey, from being the son of Nigerian immigrants to rising among the top ranks of the U.S. Navy, has been hailed as a shining example of resilience, discipline, and excellence.
Reaffirming its commitment to celebrating Nigerians excelling abroad, NIDCOM stated that Ndukwe’s success underscores the positive impact of the diaspora community and the limitless potential of Nigerians globally.
“The Commission once again extends its warm congratulations to Commodore Kelechi Ndukwe on this outstanding accomplishment,” the agency said in a statement signed by Gabriel Odu of its Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit.
