The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan Branch, Ibrahim Lawal, has called for the removal of the law on bigamy from the Nigerian constitution, describing it as outdated and inconsistent with Nigerian cultural realities.
In an exclusive interview with PrimeStar News, Lawal said the law conflicts with the traditional practices of many Nigerians.
“I wish the law on bigamy is abolished. It is a dead law that should be phased out because it does not reflect our culture,” he said.
The legal practitioner noted that he is not aware of any recent convictions under the law, stressing that its continued existence serves little purpose.
“Because of our culture, imagine sending someone to jail for marrying another person, even when they have children together. Such children may end up being labelled as children of a prisoner,” he added.
