Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of positioning himself to deliver the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
Makinde made the allegation during a recent media chat with selected journalists, where he described Wike as a “moth” within the PDP and alleged that the minister had openly pledged allegiance to President Tinubu during a private meeting.
According to Makinde, the meeting was attended by President Tinubu, the Chief of Staff to the President, and Wike. He said Wike, during the conversation, assured the President that he would “hold the PDP” for him going into the next election cycle.
“The real issue is that I was in a meeting with the President and Wike. The President’s Chief of Staff was in that meeting. Wike just said to the President, ‘Sir, I will hold PDP for you against 2027.’ I was shocked,” Makinde stated.
He added that he confronted Wike immediately after the meeting.
“We got to the verandah and I asked Wike, did we agree to this? The real issue is that Wike would like to support the President for 2027. That is fine; it is within his right to do that,” the governor said.
Makinde, however, stressed that while individuals are entitled to their political preferences, the integrity and independence of political parties must be preserved.
The development comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the PDP following the 2023 general elections, with party stakeholders divided over the roles played by some prominent members during and after the polls.
