Academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU) have embarked on an indefinite strike, effective Thursday, August 1, 2025, to demand action on unresolved welfare concerns and alleged salary disparities. The industrial action is being spearheaded by the university’s Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising key unions: the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).
In a joint notice addressed to the LASU management, the unions stated that the strike was declared following an emergency congress held on campus. The notice emphasised that the strike would persist until their demands were fully addressed by the relevant authorities.
“We write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has commenced effective Thursday, August 1, 2025. The strike action will be in force until all demands of staff members are met,” the statement read in part.
The unions cited salary imbalances and the Lagos State Government’s alleged failure to implement a new wage structure as key grievances. They accused the government of neglecting LASU staff while personnel at sister institutions—such as the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH)—already enjoy enhanced remuneration packages and better working conditions.
The strike has paralysed activities across all LASU campuses, including the College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja and the Epe campus. Staff have been directed to vacate offices, while academic and administrative operations have been suspended indefinitely.
Sources within the institution confirmed that lectures, registration procedures, and essential services have come to a standstill, disrupting the university’s schedule and causing anxiety among students.
Many students, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concern about the possible extension of the academic calendar and the uncertainty surrounding their academic future.
As at the time of filing this report, attempts by the LASU management to reach a resolution with the unions had yet to yield a breakthrough. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has not issued an official statement regarding the ongoing industrial action.
