An 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for rape by a High Court sitting in the Gwarzo Division of Kano State.
The conviction was secured by the Kano State Ministry of Justice following the successful prosecution of the defendant before High Court No. 24.
According to a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesman, Najib Lawn Dambazau, the offence was committed on November 30, 2024, in Sauna, Gabasawa Local Government Area.
Dambazau noted that the prosecution presented sufficient evidence to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Delivering judgment, the trial judge, Justice Aisha Mahmud, found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 14 years in prison.
The court, however, considered a plea for leniency presented by the defence counsel before handing down the sentence.
The case was prosecuted by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, alongside members of his team.
Reacting to the judgment, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude, commended the prosecution team for securing the conviction, describing it as a demonstration of the ministry’s commitment to justice.
The ministry reiterated its resolve to protect the rights and dignity of victims while ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences and other forms of violence are held accountable.
