The Nigerian Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has debunked the news circulating around that he would be contesting for the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
According to an unsigned press statement obtained on the X platform of the Nigeria Police Force, the IGP “strongly refuted governorship political ambition, describing the information linking him to the governorship aspirant in Ogun State as false and misleading.
The statement reads, “The Nigeria Police Force strongly refutes a misleading video falsely linking the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to political ambitions in Ogun State ahead of 2027. The video, which features a doctored billboard, is baseless and clearly aimed at misleading the public and dragging the apolitical office of the IGP into partisan politics.
“To set the record straight, two screenshots have been provided for public clarity: the first shows the original state of the area, including the actual billboard in that space – verifiable and unchanged. The second reveals the altered video with a fake campaign billboard inserted – an obvious manipulation.
“The IGP has never expressed any political interest and remains fully committed to his constitutional duties. This is yet another reminder of the dangers of misinformation. We urge the public to always verify facts before sharing, and restate that those behind this deliberate falsehood will be identified and held accountable in accordance with the law.”
