For Adamu Abdullahi, the road to a PhD was never just about academics; it became a deeply personal battle for survival, dignity, and purpose as revealed by Ikeji Veronica Adaobi on Facebook.
A scholar affiliated with Federal University Dutse, Abdullahi’s dream of earning a doctorate nearly slipped away multiple times under the weight of circumstances beyond his control.
In 2019, he secured a prestigious opportunity to study at Wuhan University in China. But just as his journey was about to begin, the outbreak of COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill, forcing him to abandon that path.
Still determined, he returned home and enrolled for a PhD in Library and Information Sciences at Bayero University, Kano. Yet, an even greater challenge awaited him, one that tested not just his ambition but his physical strength.

Dr Adamu Abdullahi on Wheelchair
Abdullahi had been living with Transverse Myelitis since 2018, a condition that gradually stole his ability to walk freely. What began as difficulty covering short distances evolved into a daily struggle with mobility and pain.
By 2025, his condition had worsened significantly. He recalls the day he walked, slowly and painfully, into his supervisor’s office. Moved by his state, the professor immediately sought help, connecting him with a specialist. Medical tests soon revealed a devastating diagnosis: a tumour in his spinal cord.
On September 6, 2025, Abdullahi underwent a life-altering spinal surgery. When he emerged, his mobility had further declined. For many, it would have marked the end of a dream.
But not for Abdullahi. Confined to a wheelchair, he pressed on. Page by page, chapter by chapter, he completed his research. And when the time came, he defended his PhD thesis, both internally and externally, from that same wheelchair.
Against all odds, he succeeded. His work has since been showcased at international conferences, a reflection not only of his academic ability but of his extraordinary resilience. Now, he hopes to channel his experience into advancing research in health informatics, a field that bridges healthcare and information science.
Abdullahi’s journey is more than a story of academic success; it is a testament to the human spirit’s refusal to surrender, even in the face of overwhelming hardship.
His message is simple, but hard-earned: never give up.
