To commemorate Space Exploration Day 2025, the Graduate Research Clinic (GRC) will host a high-level virtual seminar themed “The Role of Space in the Revitalisation of Africa’s Economy” on Monday, July 21st, at 5:00 PM WAT. The event will be livestreamed via Zoom and YouTube.
Organised in honour of the late Professor Adigun Ade Abiodun, Africa’s foremost voice in global space policy and the first African UN Expert on Outer Space Applications, the seminar will spotlight how space technology can serve as a strategic catalyst for Africa’s economic renewal.
Professor Abiodun’s legacy includes pivotal contributions to the establishment of the African Space Agency, the formulation of continental space policies, and the creation of Regional Centres for Space Science and Technology Education across the Global South.
As the global space economy edges towards a projected $2 trillion by 2040, the seminar will examine Africa’s readiness to harness space for innovation, economic transformation, and geopolitical leverage. It will highlight critical areas such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, national security, education, and digital communication.
“This is not just a conversation for scientists or policymakers,” noted the GRC Secretariat. “Whether you are in tech, education, governance, or innovation, space influences the systems we rely on and holds the keys to solving some of our biggest challenges. This is about building Africa’s future.”
