A pastor serving as a missionary in Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, has narrated how suspected Fulani militants carried out a series of coordinated attacks on several communities, killing more than 30 people and razing houses and food stores.
In a video shared on social media platforms on Tuesday, the visibly shaken clergyman described the assault as “the most devastating thing” he had ever witnessed, saying the gunmen invaded the affected areas in their hundreds, shooting indiscriminately at men, women, and children before setting homes ablaze.
“I am a missionary. I live in Ruff, which is close to Bwai District in Mangu Local Government Area,” he said. “The surrounding districts are all under my jurisdiction. What happened is that there was a serious attack by Fulani militants who came in the night and stormed the village called Kubat. About 30 people, including women and children, young and old, were killed in the attack.”
According to the pastor, the attackers also struck other nearby communities, including Murish and Jwak, leaving widespread destruction. He recounted how he and others narrowly escaped an ambush on their way to one of the affected villages.
“Even when we were on our way to the community where 30 people were killed, the Fulanis laid an ambush for us,” he said. “They were shooting at us, and we had to crawl on the ground to avoid being hit by flying bullets. By the grace of God, none of us was injured.”
He added that the militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, exchanged gunfire with military personnel deployed to the area, but the damage had already been done.
“This morning, we buried 29 people who were killed in Fungzai,” he continued. “Immediately after, we were to proceed to Kubwai for another mass burial, but security operatives warned us not to go because the Fulani people were still there.”
The missionary lamented that entire villages had been taken over, with residents fleeing for their lives amid growing insecurity.
“People are leaving the communities because the situation is bad and the Fulani people have taken over the villages,” he said. “The situation is terrible—very terrible. I can say that these attacks have been well planned and coordinated, and they have achieved their aim.”
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the attacks.
