A fire outbreak has engulfed the Great Nigeria Insurance House, a commercial plaza located on Martins Street in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State, with emergency responders working to bring the situation under control.
The fire reportedly started at about 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, and was still burning as of the time of filing this report, prompting an intensive response from emergency services.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the fire originated from one of the offices on the fourth floor of the building. He said the exact cause of the outbreak had yet to be determined.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the fire initially broke out on the fourth floor before spreading to other levels of the structure, complicating firefighting efforts.
The Great Nigeria Insurance House is predominantly used for warehouse storage and the sale of clothing materials. It also houses several corporate offices and a few retail shops.
As of press time, the number of casualties could not be confirmed, as rescue and firefighting operations were still ongoing. Emergency responders were working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring buildings in the densely populated Lagos Island commercial district.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the situation develops and investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
