Following the revelation of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) that over 81,000 schools in Nigeria lack basic security infrastructure, the Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to a centralised, tech-enabled Safe Schools system to guarantee uninterrupted learning nationwide.
Speaking during a meeting with NSCDC leadership, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa said that the Federal Government was redesigning and centralising Nigeria’s Safe Schools framework to protect learners nationwide.
Calling for a technology-driven, nationally coordinated security system for schools, Alausa commended the National Safe School Command and Control Centre, but noted that only about 11,000 schools are currently covered, far below national needs.
The Minister stressed that Safe Schools funding must be domiciled within the Federal Ministry of Education and backed by real-time technology, alerts, and rapid-response systems to counter insecurity and fear in schools.
