The Federal Government has intensified efforts to curb racketeering in the publishing of school books in Nigeria with the inaugurated a High-Level Standing Committee on Book Ranking and Selection, aimed at strengthening quality assurance, transparency, and standardisation of textbooks in Nigerian schools.
The Committee, chaired by Minister of State for Education Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, is expected to ensure that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda by protecting learners, empower teachers, and ensure value for money
According to the Federal Government, the Committee will introduce clear quality benchmarks, transparent ranking systems, pricing transparency, and ensure new textbook editions demonstrate substantial improvements in content rather than costmetic changes.
The initiative also seeks to ensure that standard textbooks are prescribed for students in both public and private primary and secondary schools nationwide.
The prescribed textbooks, which will be mandatory for all schools, are expected to remain in use for a minimum period of six years before any review or replacement.
