The Federal Government of Nigeria has banned the use of Naira notes for decorative purposes, warning Nigerians against money bouquets, cash towers, and cakes adorned with banknotes.
Authorities said such practices contravene existing currency regulations. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) described the trend as an abuse of legal tender, stressing that folding, spraying, or reshaping banknotes for gifts or events constitutes defacement.
“The Naira is a symbol of our nation and must be treated with respect,” the apex bank said, noting that using currency as party décor undermines its dignity and public value.
The government warned that event organisers, vendors, and individuals involved in such displays risk arrest and prosecution under applicable laws. Security and regulatory agencies have been directed to monitor parties, weddings, and public gatherings where cash spraying and money-themed designs are prevalent.
Officials urged citizens to adopt alternative Valentine’s gifts such as flowers, greeting cards, and packaged items, emphasising that celebrations should not compromise respect for the nation’s currency.
