The Federal Government has launched a nationwide Learner Identification Number (LIN), a digital system designed to assign every student a permanent academic identity and enhance learning continuity across the country.
According to a statement signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a transformational milestone aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that it underscores the administration’s commitment to human capital development and technology-driven reforms.
According to the Ministry, the first phase of the initiative has already seen over 1.9 million candidates sitting for the 2026 examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council issued their unique LINs. This, officials say, will significantly strengthen education data management and improve the integrity of public examinations.
The LIN system is designed to enable seamless tracking of students’ academic progression across all levels of education. It is also integrated with the Digitised National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), a platform that provides a comprehensive national register of schools.
By linking learners to verified identities, the system is expected to enhance examination security, curb impersonation, and support the monitoring of out-of-school children, dropouts, and learning gaps nationwide.
The Ministry stated that plans are underway to expand the system across both public and private schools, urging stakeholders in the education sector to support its full implementation.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Federal Ministry of Education said the initiative represents a significant step toward building a transparent, inclusive, and data-driven education system in Nigeria.
