he Federal Ministry of Education has formalised a strategic partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) to integrate birth registration and demographic intelligence into Nigeria’s school enrollment and education planning systems.
Announcing the initiative, through a statement signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director, Press and Public Relations, the Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, said credible population data remains critical to effective education planning across the country.
He noted that accurate demographic information would enable rational school siting, balanced teacher deployment, precise enrollment projections, and equitable distribution of resources.
According to the Minister, incorporating birth registration into school admission processes will promote proper age placement and strengthen the integrity of academic records nationwide.
However, he stressed that enforcement of the new measures would only follow expanded nationwide access to registration services to prevent unintended barriers for families.
Alausa underscored the importance of digital integration in driving transparency within the sector, saying that improved data systems would enhance the tracking of enrollment trends and support early identification of school dropouts.
Responding to the development, NPC Chairman Aminu Yusuf reaffirmed the Commission’s mandate to manage Nigeria’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system.
He disclosed that more than 4,000 registration centres are currently operational nationwide, with ongoing digital upgrades aimed at improving efficiency and accessibility.
Both institutions agreed to establish a Joint Technical Working Group to harmonise verification procedures and ensure interoperability between their databases.
The partnership, officials said, reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to evidence-based education reform and inclusive national development, positioning reliable demographic data at the centre of planning and service delivery.
