The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Hon. (Dr.) Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the historic milestone and commended their patriotic spirit, unity, and resilience, which, he noted, have sustained the nation since independence in 1960.
He urged citizens to remain steadfast and continue to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), which is centred on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity.
Expressing optimism about the country’s future, the minister said Nigeria will continue to grow stronger in peace, progress, and development with the cooperation of its people. He also wished citizens a joyful and memorable Independence Day celebration.
However, the Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade earlier scheduled as part of the celebrations.
In a separate statement issued on Monday and signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), the government said the decision to cancel the parade would not diminish the significance of the anniversary.
“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, 1st October,” the statement read.
“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm. Accordingly, all other programmes slated for the Independence Anniversary will remain in effect. The government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation”, the statement added.
The statement further called on Nigerians, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests to continue supporting President Tinubu’s reform agenda aimed at building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
The Independence Day parade is traditionally one of the major highlights of the anniversary celebrations, which this year is themed “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”
