General Mohammed Sani Sami, the Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, has died at the age of 81.
The emir passed away on Saturday in a London hospital after a brief illness. His death was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by Ahmed Idris, chief press secretary to the Kebbi government.
According to Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, the details of the burial arrangements will be communicated later.
“The Kebbi Government is using this medium to extend its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family members, Zuru Emirate Council, Zuru people and the entire people of Kebbi,” the statement said. “May the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.”
Born in 1943, the late monarch had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army, which he joined on December 10, 1962. He was commissioned on July 25, 1963, and rose through the ranks to serve as the military governor of Bauchi State between January 1984 and August 1985 under the regime of the late Muhammadu Buhari.
He was turbaned as the Emir of Zuru in 1995, a position he held until his passing.
