A historic moment unfolded in Ekiti State on Thursday as the first commercial flight landed at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Airport, a project long commissioned by Governor Abiodun Oyebanji.
Speaking at the event, Governor Oyebanji expressed deep satisfaction, saying, “It was a delight to witness the first commercial flight land at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Airport, a project that has been close to my heart for many years. Standing on that runway again, this time as a guest on the maiden commercial flight, filled me with a deep sense of fulfilment and gratitude.”
The airport, which had been inaugurated by immediate past governor Kayode Fayemi on the final day of his tenure, was described by Fayemi as an economic catalyst for the state.
At the inauguration, Fayemi had emphasised the facility’s world-class specifications, its capacity to handle large cargo aircraft, and its potential to boost sectors such as agriculture, commerce, tourism, and education.
While the airport was capable of handling take-offs and landings at the time of inauguration, Fayemi noted that certain ancillary components were yet to be completed for full commercial operations.
He expressed confidence that the incoming administration would see the project to completion.
Reflecting on the milestone, Fayemi said, “I am pleased that this confidence was well placed. Governor Abiodun Oyebanji and his team have done an excellent job in completing the outstanding phases and opening the airport for full commercial flights. This continuity of governance is something we have long advocated in Ekiti, and this milestone stands as proof of what is possible when each administration builds on the work of the previous one.”
Fayemi also acknowledged the contributions of technical teams, federal agencies, construction and engineering firms, and the people of Ekiti, whose patience and support sustained the vision of the airport over the years.
With commercial flights now operational, both leaders expressed optimism that the airport will unlock new economic opportunities for Ekiti State, driving growth, investment, and development in the years ahead.
Governor Oyebanji stated, “This is a proud moment for our state. And I look forward to the growth and prosperity this airport will help facilitate.”
