A major crackdown on cybercrime in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, has led to the arrest of 49 suspected internet fraudsters by operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The coordinated operation, which took place between Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, 2025, was the result of actionable intelligence linking the suspects to a network of online fraudulent activities.
EFCC officials stormed multiple locations across the city, identified as notorious hideouts for internet fraud, in a sweep that also led to the recovery of an unlicensed, loaded pistol. One of the suspects in possession of the weapon allegedly confessed during initial interrogation to being a former member of a cult group.
In addition to the firearm, investigators also seized several high-end smartphones, laptop computers, and two luxury vehicles believed to be proceeds of cybercrime.
The anti-graft agency has confirmed that the suspects will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
