Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 92 suspected internet fraudsters in Edo State.
The suspects were apprehended during a sting operation on Monday, September 29, 2025, at various locations across Benin City following credible intelligence linking them to computer-related crimes.
According to the Commission, all lawful procedures were observed during the arrest.
Items recovered from the suspects included 11 vehicles and several mobile devices.
Preliminary investigations have reportedly linked the suspects to various forms of internet-related fraud.
The EFCC stated that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
In a related development, the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC secured the conviction of two internet fraudsters, Joshua Victor David and Abdulmalik Adesanya Olayiwola, before Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
The duo was arraigned on separate one-count charges bordering on fraudulent impersonation. David was accused of impersonating one “Clara Jane” via email to defraud an unsuspecting victim, John Brill, while Olayiwola posed as “Kylie Dowdy” on Facebook with the intent to gain unlawful advantage.
Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges. Following their pleas, prosecution counsel Fadeke Giwa and Ukoha Nwandu presented evidence, including the defendants’ statements and devices recovered during the investigation, urging the court to convict them as charged.
Justice Owoeye subsequently sentenced both defendants to one year imprisonment each. David was given an option of a N300,000 fine, while Olayiwola could pay N600,000 in lieu of jail time. The court also ordered the forfeiture of David’s iPhone 16 and a bank draft valued at N250,000 to the Federal Government.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts against cybercrime and ensuring that perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
