In a dramatic twist that has upended Bayelsa’s political landscape, Governor Douye Diri has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending months of speculation about his political future.
The shocking development was confirmed on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in a video clip on X. Although Diri did not disclose the political party he is moving to but it has been reliably gathered that he has defected to the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) appears imminent.
The governor announced his exit from PDP during the weekly State Executive Council meeting held inside Government House, Yenagoa. Reports also indicate that he has formally submitted his resignation letter to the party.
He added that the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere, and other state legislators, and members of his cabinet would leave PDP with him..
Diri’s departure marks a major setback for the PDP, which has held sway in Bayelsa since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, and signals the beginning of a new, uncertain chapter in the state’s political history.
