The Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Morrison Ogbonna, was discovered dead in his hotel room in Calabar in the early hours of Thursday.
Ogbonna’s sudden death shocked his colleagues, who had gone to pick him up for a scheduled assignment.
According to sources, when repeated knocks on his door went unanswered, the officers alerted the hotel management. Staff subsequently opened the door and found the commander lifeless.
An impeccable source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Ogbonna had only recently assumed duty in Cross River State, having been transferred in August to replace Rachel Umebuali.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Irene Ugbo-Obase, said: “I can confirm to you that it is true. However, the cause of his death cannot be ascertained at the moment.”
The NDLEA and security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
