Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, describing him as a legal luminary who significantly strengthened Nigeria’s judicial and democratic institutions.
In a condolence message to Nigerians, Buhari said he was pained by the passing of the eminent jurist, noting that Justice Uwais had a “distinguished career as a lawyer and a judge.”
“As the head of the nation’s judiciary, he made notable contributions in bringing justice closer to the people. He was admired for his compassion and justice. He made important contributions towards making Nigeria’s democratic fabric stronger”, Buhari said.
The former president also praised the late CJN for his meticulous approach to the interpretation and application of the law, both as a judge and as a member of the Council of State.
“He will always be remembered by countless people for his emphasis on a meticulous approach to law. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family members, relatives, and friends who are grieving his loss as we all are”, Buhari added.
Justice Mohammed Uwais served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006, and was widely respected for his integrity, judicial reforms, and role in various national assignments, including electoral reform efforts after his retirement.
