The immediate president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, today, died in a London hospital.
Announcing his death are the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Buhari, Garba Shehu, and the family of the former president.
In a three line statement on X, dated Sunday, July 13, 2025, on behalf of the deceased former president, Garba stated, “the family The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information & Strategy, Tinubu said that Buhari died about 4.30 pm, following a prolonged illness.
The statement reads, “President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences.
“President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
“Former President Buhari was twice elected Nigeria’s President in 2015 and 2023.
“He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
“President Tinubu has ordered flags at half-staff as a mark of respect for the departed leader.”
In his condolence message, the Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde expressed his condolences to President Tinubu, and also commiserated with the wife of the former president, Hajia Aisha Buhari and his entire family, praying to God to grant repose to his soul.
Makinde, in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, described Buhari’s death as unexpected, noting, however, that the former president made his mark in serving the country.
He prayed that God gives his family the fortitude to bear the loss, while also granting the former Military Head of State Aljanah Firdaus.
