A devastating attack by Boko Haram fighters on the village of Darul Jamal in Borno State has left at least 60 people dead and displaced more than 100 others, according to local reports.
Officials confirmed that the overnight assault on Tuesday destroyed several homes and targeted residents who had only recently resettled in the community.
Security sources told reporters that the extremists suspected villagers of collaborating with the rival Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, reacting to the incident, directed the military to strengthen its presence in vulnerable communities and pledged humanitarian assistance for survivors.
While Nigerian security agencies have yet to release an official casualty figure, humanitarian workers on the ground described the incident as one of the deadliest single attacks on civilians in recent months.
The attack highlights the continuing threat posed by insurgent groups in Nigeria’s northeast, despite ongoing government efforts to stabilize resettled communities.
