Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes suffered a major setback on the night of Tuesday, September 9, 2025, after the Super Eagles were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by South Africa in Bloemfontein.
The tension-filled encounter saw the hosts take the lead in dramatic fashion when Super Eagles’ captain, William Troost-Ekong, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing South Africa the advantage.
Nigeria, however, clawed their way back into the contest just before halftime.
Striker Cyriel Dessers restored parity in the 45th minute, finishing off a rare moment of precision from the visitors to silence the home crowd and end the first half level.
Despite both sides showing flashes of intent after the break, the second half turned into a battle of missed chances and strong defensive displays. Neither team could find the cutting edge needed to secure maximum points, as the game ended in a stalemate.
The result leaves Nigeria’s World Cup dreams hanging precariously. With only two matches left to play in Group C, the Super Eagles remain six points adrift of leaders South Africa, who sit comfortably at the top with 17 points.
For the three-time African champions, the draw represents yet another missed opportunity in a qualification campaign fast slipping out of their control.
